Mercy Ships welcomes volunteers who would like to give of their time, efforts and expertise to the work of bringing hope and healing to the poor.  Short-term volunteers can participate from two-weeks to a year with Mercy Ships, while others may choose to serve in a long-term volunteer career capacity.

Bosun

 

1.                                         SUMMARY

Responsible to the Chief Officer through the Bosun and Assistant Bosun for general duties. Also responsible to the Officer of the Watch/Day, during periods on bridge/gangway watch or on fire/security patrol.

 

2.                                         ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General duties will consist of, but are not limited to:

The cleaning and maintenance of the hull and superstructure, including the hatches and holds.

The preparation of steel and wood for protective coatings and the application of these protective coatings.

Assisting in the loading, stowage/securing and unloading of cargo.

Assisting in the loading, securing and unloading of ship's vehicles.

Assisting in the mooring and unmooring of the vessel,  including anchoring, as directed.

Standing a navigational watch on the bridge at sea or at anchor, as directed.  This will include steering of the ship and keeping of a good lookout.

Standing a gangway/security watch, as per Master's standing orders.

Conducting fire/security patrols as required.

Awareness of Company’s SMS.

 

3.                                         QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

 

3.1.                                 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to understand instructions and communicate back to others in clear English.

 

3.2.                                 CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / EXPERIENCE

At least Certificate of Competency according to STCW 95 Section A-II/4 for Deck Rating

It  is required to have practical and theoretical knowledge with regard to use of hand tools and portable power tools.

 

4.                                         WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, at times, the employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
